Frequently Asked Questions About HEMA-Free BIABs

What is HEMA?

HEMA is an acronym for Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate or 2-hydroxyethyl Methacrylate, the chemical name for an acrylic monomer used to make different types of polymers. HEMA can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people with skin contact and improper curing, especially when exposed to large amounts.

How much HEMA should be in a gel bottle?

The suggested limit for nail products is to include up to 30%-35% of HEMA. The GelBottle Inc nail products have less than 20% HEMA, which is significantly lower than the standard. The GelBottle also has a HEMA-free builder gel collection as another alternative.

Is HEMA-free gel polish recommended for those with sensitive nails and skin?

Yes, HEMA-free builder gel is a safer option for those with sensitive nails and skin. By eliminating the HEMA chemical, it reduces the chance of an irritant reaction or an allergic reaction. Nail products with higher levels of HEMA are more likely to cause heat spikes during the curing process. Our original BIABs have less than 20% HEMA, our All-in-One BIABs have about 10%, and our HEMA-Free collection has 0% HEMA.

What is the difference between TGB HEMA-Free BIABs and the original BIABs?

The original TGB builder gels have less than 20% HEMA and typically do not need a base coat. Our HEMA-free builder gels have 0% HEMA and need the HEMA-Free Bond Base gel before application. Both types of builder gels are long-lasting and durable and come in various colors.

Do I need a base coat under the creamy yellow HEMA-Free Builder in a Bottle?

Yes! The creamy yellow HEMA-Free builder gel polish does require a base coat, specifically the HEMA-Free Bond Base, before you apply the builder gel.

How do I apply the creamy yellow HEMA-Free BIAB?

Applying the creamy yellow builder gel:

  • Prep the nails by cleaning, pushing back cuticles, filing, gently buffing, and dehydrating the nail plate.

  • Apply the HEMA-Free Bond Base gel to the natural nail, and cure for 99 seconds under the TGB Light the Way Nail Lamp.

  • Apply a thin layer of the creamy yellow HEMA-Free builder gel, and cure for 99 seconds.

  • Apply a medium bead of the creamy yellow HEMA-Free builder gel, seal the free edge, and cure for 99 seconds. Repeat this step at least one more time.

  • Refine the nail if needed. Wipe with isopropyl alcohol, use the TGB 120/180 Grit File, buff the nail with the TGB 100/180 Grit Buffer, and then remove any dust with a dusting brush.

  • If no refining was needed, then remove the inhibition layer with isopropyl alcohol.

  • Finish off with a layer of TGB HEMA-Free Glow Top.

Is the creamy yellow HEMA-Free builder gel polish cruelty-free?

Yes! Our creamy yellow HEMA-Free BIAB is vegan and cruelty-free. None of our builder gels use animal byproducts or testing, and all our products are Leaping Bunny Certified. This is great to have in your salon or nail tech kit for clients who prefer vegan gel polish.

How long does the creamy yellow HEMA-Free builder gel bottle last?

The creamy yellow HEMA-Free builder gel in our 20ml bottle can last for 25 to 65 sets, depending on the nail and extension length.

Can I use the creamy yellow HEMA-Free builder gel on natural nails or tips?

Both! The creamy yellow HEMA-Free builder gel works beautifully on overlays, tips, and natural nails. Gel polish works to strengthen and protect your nails. This is done by reinforcing the nails with hard, durable layers of gel.

How do I remove creamy yellow HEMA-Free builder gel polish?

Removing creamy yellow HEMA-Free builder gel is a five-step process:

  • Start by cleaning the nails thoroughly.

  • Use the 120/180 grit file to remove the top coat of HEMA-Free builder gel until there is no more shine.

  • Soak TGB Lint-Free Wipes in 100% acetone, and wrap nails in foil or TGB nail clips for 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Remove the foil or nail clip from one nail at a time, and gently scrape off the HEMA-Free builder gel with a tool — like the TGB Cuticle Pusher — before starting the next nail. If the gel did not soak off completely, wrap it again and let soak for another five to 10 minutes. Never force the gel off, and do not rush the process.

  • Note: Removal time will vary depending on the thickness of the HEMA-Free BIAB layers.

  • Buff nails if there is any base coat left, then shape the natural nail.
