The How-To Guide for BIAB™ Removal

BIAB™ (Builder in a Bottle) has revolutionized the nail industry, offering strength, flexibility, and long-lasting wear. But just as important as application is the correct removal technique. Follow this step-by-step guide on how to remove builder gel.

Why Proper BIAB Removal Matters

BIAB is designed to provide superior adhesion and durability, meaning incorrect removal can lead to unnecessary damage. Rushing the process or using excessive force can weaken the natural nail, causing peeling or thinning. With the right technique, you can remove BIAB efficiently while keeping the nail plate intact.

What You’ll Need

  • 120/180 Grit Nail File: to break the top coat seal and thin down the BIAB layer

  • Pure acetone: the key ingredient for soaking off BIAB

  • Removal Foils: to hold the soaked cotton pads in place

  • Portable E-File (Optional): for a quicker and more precise removal

  • ProPrep: to gently remove softened BIAB

  • Nail Buffers: to smooth out the nail after removal

  • Cuticle Essence: to rehydrate and nourish the nails after the removal

Methods for Removing Builder Gel

1. BIAB Soak-Off With Acetone

Best for: nail techs who want a gentle way to remove nails.

  1. File down the top coat with a 120/180 Nail File to break the seal.

  2. Saturate the lint-free wipe built into our Removal Foils with 100% pure acetone, and place it over the nail.

  3. Wrap the Removal Foil around the finger, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then check if the BIAB has softened.

  4. Gently push away the product using your ProPrep cuticle pusher.

  5. If needed, rewrap and soak for another five minutes before repeating the process.

  6. Finish by buffing the nail and hydrating the area with our cuticle oil, Cuticle Essence.

Pro tip: Never force the BIAB off if it hasn’t fully lifted — this can cause nail damage.

2. E-File BIAB Removal

Best for: experienced nail techs who want a fast, controlled removal.

  1. Use a medium-grit carbide bit like our multitasking 6-In-1 Bit on our Portable E-File to remove the bulk of the BIAB.

  2. Work at a low-to-medium speed to avoid heat buildup.

  3. Keep the e-file moving in smooth, even motions to prevent friction burns.

  4. Leave a thin layer of BIAB on the nail to prevent overfiling.

  5. Buff and shape the nail before reapplication or finishing with cuticle oil.

Pro tip: Always check the client’s comfort level, and avoid excessive pressure on the nail bed.

3. BIAB File-Off Only Method

Best for: clients with sensitivities to acetone or those who prefer a no-soak option.

  1. Use a 120/180 Nail File to gradually file down the BIAB.

  2. Work gently, especially when nearing the natural nail.

  3. Leave a thin layer of BIAB to act as a protective base for future applications.

  4. Buff and smooth the surface to remove any uneven texture.

  5. Finish with cuticle oil to rehydrate the nail.

Pro tip: This method takes patience — overfiling can weaken the natural nail, so take it slow.

BIAB Removal: Do'and Don’ts

  • Do take your time and let acetone do the work of soaking off.

  • Do use gentle pressure when removing product — no scraping!

  • Do hydrate nails after removal to prevent dryness.

  • Don’t pick or peel off BIAB — this will damage the nail plate.

  • Don’t rush the removal process; patience is key for strong nails.

  • Don’t use metal tools aggressively, as they can cause trauma to the nail bed.

Alternative Removal: Fills Instead of Soak-Offs

If your client loves their BIAB nails but wants a refresh, consider fills instead of full removals. Filling with BIAB every two to three weeks helps maintain nail strength while reducing the need for repeated soak-offs, keeping the nails in optimal condition.

The Takeaway

BIAB offers unmatched durability, but proper removal is crucial for maintaining strong nails. Whether you choose the soak-off, e-file, or nail file method for Builder in a Bottle removal, using the correct technique helps prevent damage and prioritizes the integrity of the natural nail.
