Salon Spotlight: Banana Nails – Chicago’s Top Spot for Gel Nails

Salon owner and nail tech Anastasiia standing outside her nail supply store

Welcome to our first TGB Salon and Spa Stories spotlight! Every month, we will be showcasing salons and spas from around the world, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their local markets, trends, and the incredible people behind them. We hope these stories inspire you and help grow our global community of nail professionals.

First up, we’re heading to Chicago home of the Chicago Cubs, deep-dish pizza, Wrigley Field, The Bean, and a bustling beauty scene.

Wandering down one of Chicago's charming tree-lined streets, framed by brick buildings and boutique storefronts, you will come across Banana Nails. Inside, we are greeted by the salon’s owner, the award-winning nail technician, Anastasiia Rozdobutko.

Turning Vision Into Reality  The Story Behind Banana Nails

Thank you so much for joining us today, Anastasiia! What inspired you to open Banana Nails?

I wanted an independent lifestyle, which has always been important to me. After working for someone else for a while, I felt ready to take the leap and open my salon.

What was your inspiration for your salon's design?

I had very limited finances less than $10K so I had to make wise decisions. The vibe I wanted was clean and organized, with cleanliness being key. I kept it minimal with white walls and black ceilings. I splurged on quality tables and a logo that helped my salon stand out. When I opened my second salon, I had a bigger budget, which allowed me to splurge a bit more and put more thought into the design. For me, the most important thing is achieving a clean look and feel.

Chicago’s Beauty Scene  Nail Trends and Popular Services

What trends and services are most popular in Chicago right now?

Gel services are quickly becoming the most popular option in my area. While some clients still prefer acrylics and likely always will we are seeing more and more people switch to gels. I also network with professionals outside my area, and they are noticing the same trend. This year, in particular, metallics, cat-eye designs, and chrome finishes are the most requested styles in my salons.

What do you think will be trending a year from now?

Fashion is always rotating; it is cyclical. For the next few years, natural nails will remain at the top, and I do not see that slowing down anytime soon.

The Rise of Gel Nails  Why Clients Are Making the Switch

Why do you think people are moving to gels?

People love how gel nails look and feel, and it is what they see all over social media.

Do you prefer gels over acrylics? Why?

Gel does not have the same odor as acrylic, and we are not inhaling dust or monomers. We can also perform services faster, which is a win for business owners because it allows us to serve more clients in a day. Plus, clients appreciate spending less time in the chair — they are busy, too.

Banana Nails’ Gel Services  Offering Variety and Expertise

What gel services does Banana Nails offer?

We do it all: gel extensions using ProForm, Builder in a Bottle (BIAB), and DesignEx Pro™. I do not prefer one over the other; each has its own strengths, and we choose the service based on the client’s nail goals. I love working with ProForm because it dries super fast, which is great for clients who are in a rush or show up late!

Business Ownership  Challenges and Rewards

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?

I can create jobs, and I love the feeling of helping someone with a career where they can support themselves and their families.

You are involved in the nail community beyond owning and running Banana Nails. Can you tell us more about that?

Where to start! I own a supply store right next to one of my salons, which is super convenient for both me and my customers because it allows us to be open seven days a week. I am also a TGB educator and run an academy. In my free time, I focus on giving back to the community. Nail technicians need more resources and support, so I started a podcast called Nailonaire to address these issues.

Overcoming Challenges and Learning To Lead

We have witnessed quite a bit of your success. What has been the most challenging part of running Banana Nails?

Aside from nail services, I had no experience with running a business or managing employees before I opened my salon. When two of my nail technicians left for other salons, I realized it was time for a change. So, I invested in management training and took business courses to become a more effective leader and business owner.

The GelBottle Inc and Its Role in Banana Nails’ Success

How has The GelBottle Inc (TGB) helped shape your salon?

Many clients come to us specifically because we use BIAB. We even receive calls from out-of-state clients who want to ensure we are using authentic TGB products when they visit the city. The high quality of these products has not only enhanced our services but also has played a key role in helping me grow my business.
